Upon assessment completion the client and counsellor develop a program tailored to the individuals needs. Goals are based on the basic philosophy of creating awareness, taking responsibility and making changes. Our assessment also covers case management needs, which can include referrals to: Addiction physicians Psychological testing Financial assistance Marital and family Stress management Physical Fitness Psychiatric Consultation & Care Recovery Housing Career & vocational counselling Legal counsell Anger management Nutritional counselling Individual Counselling In the form of private sessions the client works one on one with the counsellor in regularly scheduled appointments. Recognizing the value of flexibility our counselling sessions are either offered at our premise or a mutually agreed upon site. Referrals to addiction related support groups and or treatment programs either public or private are also made depending on the individuals needs. Family Counselling Recognizing that families can suffer along with their loved one we also offer preliminary family assessments. In the form of private sessions, the counsellor meets with the family or those concerned. This can range from strategies on dealing with your loved ones dependency, resources and support through a very difficult time. These sessions, depending on the needs of the family or group, may or may not directly involve the attendance of the client themselves. Teen Counselling We believe addiction is a principle problem that can prevent adolescent and teens from realizing their full potential. School, relationships and mental health often suffer as a result of drug and alcohol abuse. Untreated substance abuse can lead to legal problems, hospitalizations and sometimes death. Counselling sessions are focused on a teen \'s involvement with substance use and the impact it has on their relationships with self, family and community. Weekly sessions encourage youth in developing accountability and responsibility for their life and the direction it is heading. Change is a process and we work with youth in supporting the necessary changes to recover from problem substance use and addiction. Peers Helping Peers An approach which we helped pioneer in the late eighties throughout the Secondary School System has been a Peer Helping Peers approach. Talking about change is one thing but many teens need someone their own age to help them find their way through difficult social times, setting up limits and boundaries with past friends and developing a healthier personal identity. Through groups and individual informal meetings we help peers develop new relationships with others in recovery. Coaching Programs & Intensive Out-Patient We have developed a coaching program as a response to clients who would like more support than weekly counselling sessions provide, but still less intrusive than a structured treatment environment. Our coaching program allows the client the flexibility of staying connected to their daily life while having all the benefits of a more intensive day treatment program. Our out-patient, coaching recovery program focuses on goal attainment and life enrichment tailored to client needs. Daily, weekly and monthly counselling sessions are offered on line, by phone or in person. A protocol is developed based on the guiding principles of Awareness, Responsibility, & Change, which the counsellor and the client create together during the assessment and is entered into for a minimum of a 30-day period. This method has also proven valuable as a pre-treatment program for those wishing to enter a more structured recovery environment. Coaching fees include all individual-counselling sessions, telephone consultations, case management work and participation in recovery oriented activities (introduction to community based recovery groups, recovery workshops and any additional therapeutic activities counsellor and client agree upon). In-Patient Care Sometimes treatment is the only option it may be important to remove yourself from your addictive lifestyle and environment so that you can focus on overcoming your addiction dependency, without the added stress of a difficult or negative environment. If it is found that immediate help is appropriate, the staff at New Life has hundreds of contacts throughout the local, national and international recovery community allowing you immediacy and the highest quality of care available. Relapse Prevention Counselling We all know that most people struggle in recovery with relapse, which unfortunately is a common occurrence. Working through cravings, preventing relapse and working through a relapse are all-important aspects in your recovery. You may find that you are living day by day with the fear of relapsing. Living in fear greatly hampers your recovery and sobriety, and is not necessary. The New Life counselling staff will teach you how you can live a happy, healthy life, without fear and without relapse. At New Life, we teach patients to change their self-concept through our flexible innovative treatment approach, addiction relapse does not have to occur or get in the way of recovery. People can live happy, healthy lives without the constant negative affirmations that they are sick, and must fear that they will relapse at any moment. This is only a perception, not a reality. Any person has the ability to change their perception, thinking, behavior and reality. We will provide you with relapse prevention techniques that allow you to change your perception and thinking and live a health happier life free of worry and fear. Group Counselling Therapeutic support groups are offered to provide clients with an opportunity to discuss their problems with others in a safe comfortable atmosphere. Intervention Training: About 15 years ago researchers began to realize that not helping hurts; they discovered that we were killing people with kindness. As a result, a person with a substance problem would sometimes arrive in treatment - or at the emergency room - too late. Every substance abuser has a family, friends, co-workers, or classmates who care. Using proven intervention training techniques those concerned are better able to encourage the chemically dependent person to accept the reality of the problem and seek support in dealing with it. The following is an excerpt from The Transtheoretical Model of Change or STAGES OF CHANGE. This illustrates very clearly the process individuals go through when making a change. Each stage lasts for various lengths of time, but can be shortened due to the individuals motivating factors. This model also illustrates why family and friends find the helping process a taxing and difficult one especially when individuals are in the initial stages of change. At New Life we work with clients, motivating them through the stages of change. With the goals of awareness, responsibility and change, clients are engaged in a therapeutic process, which promotes life changes that are significant and lasting. PRECONTEMPLATION Stance No intentions of change I have no interest in quitting/reducing. Reasoning Unaware/underaware of problem and its effect Others See Problem Reluctance - lack the knowledge or energy to consider change Rebellion - have a heavy investment in the problem behavior and in making their own decisions Resignation lack of energy and investment have given up on the possibility of change and seem overwhelmed by the problem. Rationalization - has all the answers - gives reasons for why the problem is not a problem or is a problem for other but not for them. CONTEMPLATION Stance Aware of problem Thinking, but no commitment I want to quit/reduce, but I really like it. Reasoning Ambivalence (weighing benefits vs. fears of quitting/reducing) Will be open to processing information but not setting goals or changing behavior Can remain in this stage for a very long time PREPARATION Stance Serious commitment to change a priority I am ready to quit. Requesting advice and information Reasoning/Plan Have a realistic assessment of degree of difficulty Recognition that sustained action is required Most individuals in this stage make a serious attempt at change in the near future and many have made an attempt to modify their behaviors in the recent past. ACTION Stance Have a plan (and have made small changes) Motivated, Exited about change Reasoning/Plan Implements the plan - changes behavior - ex. Quits using the chemical Frequently craves the chemical of choice This stage usually last 3-6 months MAINTENANCE Work at establishing new patterns Threat of relapse or a return to old patterns becomes less frequent and less intense with time At New Life we work with clients, motivating them through the stages of change. With the goals of awareness, responsibility and change, clients are engaged in a therapeutic process, which promotes life changes that are significant and lasting. Research shows that when appropriate out-patient/in-patient treatment is given, and when clients follow their prescribed program, treatment can work. More importantly, treatment can help keep you and your loved ones together. Denial exists in all alcohol and other addicted people. It is not simply refusing to admit to a problem. People near death because of their drinking sometimes continue to believe that they do not have a drinking problem! They give excuses: You \'d drink too much, too, if you had a family like mine; I can \'t be an alcoholic, I only drink beer! Your friend will probably reject your advice and become defensive or retreat into silence. Your friend will probably make promises, and deny that a problem exists and will question your loyalty. Don \'t be discouraged. It is not the real person talking, but the alcohol-drug dependent individual whose life is out of control. The way to dealing with denial is through being informed and having professional guidance. Please read on to understand the process some individuals go through in making changes . Alcohol Tobacco : Teens who smoke are three times more likely than nonsmokers to use alcohol, eight times more likely to use marijuana, and 22 times more likely to use cocaine. Smoking is associated with a host of other risky behaviors, such as fighting and engaging in unprotected sex. Prescribed medications (such as Ritalin and OxyContin) Inhalants : Known by such street names as huffing, sniffing and wanging, the dangerous habit of getting high by inhaling the fumes of common household products is estimated to claim the lives of more than a thousand children each year. Many other young people, including some first-time users, are left with serious respiratory problems and permanent brain damage. Over-the-counter cough, cold, sleep, and diet medications (such as Coricidin) Marijuana : About one half of the people in the United States have used marijuana, many are currently using it and some will require treatment for marijuana abuse and dependence. Stimulants : The possible long-term effects include tolerance and dependence, violence and aggression, malnutrition due to suppression of appetite. Crack, a powerfully addictive stimulant, is the term used for a smokeable form of cocaine. In 1997, an estimated 1.5 million Americans, age 12 and older, were chronic cocaine users. Club drugs : This term refers to drugs being used by teens and young adults at all-night dance parties such as raves or trances, dance clubs, and bars. MDMA (Ecstasy), GHB, Rohypnol (Rophies), ketamine, methamphetamine, and LSD are some of the club or party drugs gaining popularity. Because some club drugs are colorless, tasteless, and odorless, they can be added unobtrusively to beverages by individuals who want to intoxicate or sedate others. In recent years, there has been an increase in reports of club drugs used to commit sexual assaults. · Depressants: These are drugs used medicinally to relieve anxiety, irritability, and tension. There is a high potential for abuse and, combined with alcohol, effects are heightened and risks are multiplied. Heroin : Several sources indicate an increase in new, young users across the country who are being lured by inexpensive, high-purity heroin that can be sniffed or smoked instead of injected. Heroin has also been appearing in more affluent communities. Steroids : Anabolic steroids are a group of powerful compounds closely related to the male sex hormone testosterone. From 1998 to 1999, there was a significant increase in anabolic steroid abuse among middle-schoolers. The use of illegal drugs is increasing, especially among young teens. The average age of first marijuana use is 14, and alcohol use can start before age 12. The use of marijuana and alcohol in high school has become common. Parents can help through early education about drugs, open communication, good role modeling, and early recognition if problems are developing. If there is any suspicion that there is a problem, parents can consult an addiciton/health care professional to discuss their options/choices. To see if a problem exsits, please try the drug and alcohol assesments. People have long believed that a person must hit bottom before he or she is in a position to get help. About 15 years ago researchers began to realize that not helping hurts; they discovered that we were killing people with kindness. As a result, a person with a substance problem would sometimes arrive in treatment - or at the emergency room - too late. Neither you nor anyone else can force someone to stop using substances, but you can encourage and help them to make changes. TALKING TO TEENS ABOUT THE PROBLEM? Don \'t jump to conclusions Identify specific concerns with spouse first Get as many facts as possible before facing child Arrange a time and place for discussion Discuss specific changes with child Be cool, calm, collected, concerned DON \'T PANIC OR BE CONFRONTATIONAL Ask the child for an explanation Don \'t assume anything, wait for an answer State rules and consequences of failure to follow rules Continue to monitor the situation after the discussion CALL FOR APPOINTMENT/INFORMATION TO DISCUSS: Setting better limits: What is appropriate and inappropriate Setting preventative rules to assist your teen. Monitoring Consistency Compliance Consequences TALKING TO AN ADULT ABOUT THE PROBLEM? Talk to the person you \'re worried about. Find a time when they \'re not under the influence and when you \'re reasonably calm. Tell them about the problems their substance use is causing. Help them to see the effects of their substance use as this might encourage them to change their behaviour Listen to them. Find out how they feel about their substance use and how it helps them. Avoid getting into arguments, it will make it more difficult for them to talk openly to you about things in the future. For the same reason try to avoid sounding as if you \'re nagging or accusing. Be consistent. Don \'t keep changing your mind about what you \'re saying, or say one thing and do another. Make it clear when behaviour is unacceptable. Make it clear what action you will take if they do not keep to their side of the bargain. Don \'t make idle threats. Discuss with friends and family what you are trying to do, encourage them to support you and take a similar approach. This will be less confusing for the person who is abusing substances. Help the person who is using to be realistic. Don \'t encourage them to make promises they can \'t keep. Try to change patterns of behaviour that make it easier for them to use. For example, don \'t give them money if you think they will spend it on alcohol/drugs. Don \'t try and hide the effects of the person \'s substance use (for example, phoning work with excuses, clearing up the mess, putting them to bed, missing social events for fear of embarrassment.) Encourage the person to reflect on how drink/drugging is affecting their life rather than using a label like alcoholic or addict. Offer your help-go to an NA/AA/CA LINK meeting with your friend or offer to get him/her educational materials or help to find a professional to talk to about the problem. Experimentation with drugs during adolescence is common. Unfortunately, teenagers often don’t see the link between their actions today and the consequences tomorrow. They also have a tendency to feel indestructible and immune to the problems that others experience. Using alcohol and tobacco at a young age increases the risk of using other drugs later. Some teens will experiment and stop, or continue to use occasionally, without significant problems. Others will develop a dependency; moving on to more dangerous drugs and causing significant harm to themselves and possibly others. Adolescence is a time for trying new things. Teens use drugs for many reasons, including curiosity, because it feels good, to reduce stress, to feel grown up or to fit in. It is difficult to know which teens will experiment and stop and which will develop serious problems. Who is At Risk? Teenagers at risk for developing serious alcohol and drug problems include those: with a family history of substance abuse who are depressed who have low self-esteem, and who feel like they don’t fit in or are out of the mainstream. He is outgoing, full of life and has a wonderful sense of humour, however not so long ago he started changing. He didn \'t talk as much and became more and more secretive. His old friends stopped calling and he didn \'t want to introduce us to his new friends who called all the time. His grades were dropping and he rarely attended school. We suspected drugs, but thought it was a phase he would snap out of. When we confronted him we got the same old song and dance. Okay, okay, I \'ll change!, but he didn \'t. He seemed stoned all the time and when he wasn \'t, he was argumentative, moody and very defensive. Our life at home was becoming a nightmare. Household items went missing and he was suspended from school for smoking pot on the property. Our hearts were breaking as we laid down the law; either get help or live somewhere else. We started taking him to a counsellor at New Life, where he was able to talk about his drug abuse and develop a realistic plan. We realized it was a family problem; we were getting sick watching him destroy his life. He didn \'t change overnight, it was more like a process that we went through as a family. Proudly, I can say our son is currently in his 2nd year of University with a bright future ahead of him. We are forever grateful to the staff at New Life for restoring the happiness in our life. Thank You Martin S. I had been using pot since high school. Now at forty-five, I \'m married with two grown children and a great job. I was losing it all because I started using cocaine then crack. I needed to use. The more I used the more my addiction progressed. My family didn \'t know what was wrong and kept making excuses for me when I couldn \'t go to work or missed social functions due to my all night binges. My wife thought I was fooling around because I stayed out all night and lied about where I was to hide my addiction. I was living a double life. My wife finally caught on and didn \'t know what to do. She would find my drugs and throw them out, which would only infuriate me. I would make promises to quit. Now I realize that all I was doing was trying to gain more time and not face the pain the addiction had caused. She made an appointment at New Life for me. I didn \'t want to go, but knew I had to do something. From the first session I felt relief, I found the staff to be knowledgeable and non-judgemental. I started a coaching program and was able to put my life back together in a few months. Its been 5 years since I used and my life is better than I ever thought possible. I still have my days from time to time but I can get through them without drugs. Thanks, Paul D. I am writing this to let you know of the problem I faced with prescription pills. I am married, a career woman and have one child. I started using painkillers after a car accident left me in great back pain. After 1 year my pain had subsided but I was hooked on the painkillers. I asked for help but every time I tried to quit I failed. I started hiding how much I was using from my family and friends. My doctor threatened to cut me off, if I wouldn \'t get help. I started buying pills off the street; I was so ashamed of myself. I had a great life, what happened to me. I \'d go to sleep promising myself that I would quit the next day but try as I might on my own I couldn \'t get through a day without them. My addiction only progressed. I hated myself and everyone around me. I got caught stealing at work to support my drug use. My bosses confronted me and I told them I had a problem and needed help. They called New Life and within the week I was in for an assessment and off to treatment. I \'m not going to say it was easy, just the opposite it was the hardest thing I ever had to do, but it was the best decision I ever made. I still keep in touch with the staff at New Life and I highly recommend them if you or someone you know is having a problem. They have been there too. What I liked most was that they treated me as a person when I felt less than human; they didn \'t look down on me. It \'s been 18 months and life is going well, I have the respect of my family, my bosses at work and most importantly my self respect and dignity back. Thank you New Life, Tina R. If there is any suspicion that there is a problem , parents and family must find the most appropriate intervention for their loved one. The decision to get treatment for a child, adolescent or loved one is serious. Parents and family members are encouraged to seek consultation from a trained addiction counselllor when making decisions about substance abuse treatment for children, adolescents and adults. No single treatment is appropriate for everyone. At New Life counselling we believe it is important to match treatment settings, interventions, and services to each individual \'s particular problems and needs. This is critical to his or her ultimate success in returning to healthy functioning in the family, school, and society. Remaining in treatment for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness and positive change. Each person is different and the amount of time in treatment will depend on his or her problems and needs. Research shows that for most individuals, the beginning of improvement begins at about 1-3 months into the treatment process. After this time, there is usually further progress toward recovery. Counselling (Individual and/or group) and other behavioral therapies are critical components of effective treatment. In therapy, adults/teens look at issues of motivation, build skills to resist substance use, replace substance -using activities with constructive and rewarding behaviors, and improve problem-solving skills. Behavioral therapy also facilitates interpersonal relationships and the person \'s ability to function in the home and community. Detoxification Whether it is at home, in a residential setting or hospital based is only the first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug use. For some substance users medical detoxification safely manages the acute physical symptoms of withdrawal associated with stopping drug use. While detoxification alone is rarely sufficient to help addicts achieve long-term abstinence, for some individuals it is a strongly indicated precursor to effective drug addiction treatment. Relapse Relapses to substance use can occur during or after successful treatment episodes. Addicted individuals may require prolonged treatment or multiple episodes of treatment to achieve long-term abstinence and fully restored functioning. Participation in self-help( LINK SELF HELP ) support programs during and following treatment often is helpful in maintaining abstinence. Parents and family members should ask what aftercare treatment services are available for continued or future treatment. At New Life We all know that most people struggle in recovery with relapse, which unfortunately is a common occurrence. Preventing relapse is one of the most important aspects in your recovery. You may find that you are living day by day with the fear of relapsing. Living in fear greatly hampers your recovery and sobriety, and is not necessary. Whether you are involved in our coaching program, groups or individual counselling the staff at New Life counselling will teach you how you can live a happy, healthy life, without fear and without relapse. Most people won \'t walk up to someone they \'re close to and ask for help. In fact, they will probably do everything possible to deny or hide the problem. But, there are certain warning signs that may indicate a family member or friend is using drugs and drinking too much alcohol. If your friend or loved one has one or more of the following signs, he or she may have a problem with drugs or alcohol: Physical Deterioration of physical appearance and grooming. Fatigue, run-down, sleeping in, hung over in mornings, repeated health complaints, red and glazed eyes and a lasting cough. Emotional Personality change, sudden mood changes, easily irritated, general changes in overall attitude, irresponsible behavior, poor judgment and a general lack of interest. Feeling hopeless, depressed or even suicidal. Unusual flare-ups or outbreaks of temper. Family Starting arguments, breaking rules, or withdrawing from the family. Living a hotel/motel existence. Work/School Decreased interest, negative attitude. Abrupt changes in work or quality of work, /grades, absences, and discipline problems. Promises to straighten out but unable to keep commitments. Withdrawal from responsibilities. Suspension and warnings from work/school for an alcohol-or drug-related incident. Social New friends who are less interested in standard home and school activities, problems with the law, and changes to less conventional styles in dress and music. Unusual borrowing of money from family & friends. Stealing small items from employer or home. Secretive behaviour regarding actions and possessions. Poorly concealed attempts to avoid suspicion such as frequent trips to storage rooms, restroom, garage and basement. Lying about things, or the amount of drugs or alcohol they are using. Giving up activities they used to do such as sports, hobbies, stop socializing with non-using friends. Many of the signs, such as sudden changes in mood, difficulty in getting along with others, poor job, irritability, and depression, might be explained by other causes. Unless you observe drug use or excessive drinking, it can be hard to determine the cause of these problems. Parents/loved ones may recognize signs of trouble but should not be expected to make the diagnosis. Your first step is to contact a qualified alcohol and drug professional who can give you further advice. At New Life we have developed a comprehensive assessment system that will determine if, and to what degree, chemical dependency is a problem in a persons life. In addition consulting a physician to rule out physical causes of the warning signs is a good adjunct to our assessment. This should often be followed or accompanied by a comprehensive evaluation by a psychiatrist or mental health professional. To see if a problem exsits, please try the drug and alcohol assesments.
